Michael Crites has served as executive editor of AmericanFirearms.org since 2016 and previously held positions as associate editor and range correspondent dating back to 2000. Georgia&#8217;s Daniel Defense has long been a big name in factory SBRs and pistol-length ARs in 5.56 and <a href="/best-300-blackout-rifles/">.300 Blackout</a> but plans to get into the pistol caliber carbine market later this year.

In other words, just in time for Christmas.

Something is going on when it comes to .22 caliber ammunition. There is both a move to make current .22LR loads much better, delivering almost unheard-of performance out of guns that already exist, as well as introducing new cartridges to further break the mold.

The folks that put on the &#8220;Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show&#8221; issued press creds to something like 2,000 members of the gun media from around the world. Here are the coolest tragically underreported guns from the event that deserve a second (or even first) look.

Can a traditional 1911 manufacturer compete in the modern 2011 arena? We fired 847 rounds through Kimber&#8217;s 2K11 answer to find out.
For thirty years, Kimber built beautiful single-stack 1911s that purists loved and competitors ignored. But with Staccato dominating the high-capacity 1911 market and polymer pistols eating everyone else&#8217;s lunch, even the most traditional manufacturers face a hard choice: evolve or fade away.
The Kimber 2K11 is that evolution—a machined aluminum double-stack 2011 that packs 17-20 rounds of 9mm (or 13 rounds of .45 ACP) into a platform that promises custom-level accuracy at production-gun prices. At $1,700-2,500 depending on variant, it sits squarely between budget Springfield Prodigys and premium Staccatos, targeting shooters who want more than entry-level but can&#8217;t justify $2,800 for a pistol.
The question isn&#8217;t whether the 2K11 is well-made—it&#8217;s whether Kimber can overcome its inconsistent quality reputation while competing against established players who&#8217;ve spent years perfecting the double-stack 1911 formula. After six months of testing across multiple shooters, ammunition types, and conditions, we have answers.

The polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol market has been dominated by one name for over four decades: Glock. While the Austrian “plastic-fantastic” maker’s reliability and simplicity earned well-deserved respect, their reluctance to make serious innovations beyond incremental updates issued as &#8220;generations&#8221; has left the door wide open for American manufacturers to step up with something better. 
Enter the Ruger RXM—a collaboration that nobody saw coming but everyone should have expected.

Taurus and I have, well, let’s call it history. For years, the Brazilian gunmaker occupied a niche in my gun safe—affordable alternatives that worked but never felt finished. I say this because the triggers were mushy, the finishes wore quickly, and quality control sometimes felt more like quality suggestions. So, when the Taurus GX4 showed up for evaluation, I approached it with the same enthusiasm I&#8217;d have for a root canal.
