Smith & Wesson Gets an Equalizer

Smith and Wesson introduced the “easy to use” M&P Shield EZ models in 2019. Chambered in .380 ACP and equipped with a special reduced-weight recoil spring that allowed those without a lot of hand strength to better rack the slide, they were handy and compact single-stack pistols that included both a standard rear grip safety and an optional thumb safety for those who wanted that extra bit-o-insurance against negligent discharges.

The guns proved to be wildly popular, and Smith soon announced not only Performance Center models but also EZ variants in both 9mm and the new .30 Super Carry.

Now comes the Equalizer.

Essentially building on the EZ empire but bringing with it the double-stack Shield Plus grip width and magazine footprint, you now get an optics-ready pistol that accepts 10+1, 13+1, or 15+1 mags, while still having a rear grip safety and a slide that your typical 80-year-old retired librarian can easily rack. We suppose that’s where the “Equalizer” term comes from. The price is $599.
